I remember the source: The Wall Street Journal. Unfortunately, I do not subscribe to it anymore, and their website is subscribers only, so no link to post.
Anyway, sometime within last year there was a major size survey done by American clothes manufacturers trying to basically figure out the demand for various sizes and shapes. They measured thousands of people in the malls, etc.
When the WSJ covered the survey findings (average American woman is size 14), it also mentioned how the definition of size 8 has changed with the time, giving both the current standard and the 50s one. Actually, when I thought of it, it's rather size deflation. Manufacturers want women to feel good, so the smaller the size on the label, the more attractive the clothes become to the buyer.
Somewhere else I saw a debunking of the myth that M. Monroe wore size 12. Yes, her clother said 12, but with her measurements, she'd be likely to wear 8 now. I am about her size, and some clothes in my wardrobe (GAP, notably, have size 4 on the label). A few years back, the dress in which she sang "Happy Birthday" to Kennedy was exhibited in New York. Definitely, not modern 12.
Hmmm... That's quite interesting! Thank you very much! I would be curious to read about it a bit more and add to my collection of books and articles about her. I have access to WSJ library, so I'll try to find that article sometime next week.
Basically, M.Monroe could have worn size 12 at her heaviest. However, what we see in the movie footage is probably at most from the midrange.
Also, the measurements listed are way below 12. They are more likely to correspond to the lower bound of her weight, 118. Let's ask someone with 22-23 inches waist what size they wear.
